During 2007-2010, in order to support the achievement of the objectives of the International Waters focal area, GEF intends to focus on the reduction of nutrient over-enrichment and oxygen depletion from land-based pollution of coastal waters in large marine ecosystems (LMEs) consistent with GPA. The UNDP Oceans and Coastal Areas programme, through the LME programme, as well as through its flagship integrated coastal management programme, the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia, applies “top-down/bottom-up” approaches to promoting sustainable use of the oceans.
