Dr. Fathalla began his academic career in 1972 as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Assiut University, Egypt, where he continues to teach; he was also Dean of the medical school at the same university (1978-1986).

Over the past two years Operation Smile has organized missions with U.S. and international doctors and nurses to Egypt on three occasions. In May 2007, Operation Smile visited Assiut and in October 2007 the NGO traveled to Qena. This year, Operation Smile Egypt is holding its mission in Cairo from October 23 to 30 in the Arab Contractors Medical Center in Nasr City.
وخلال العامين الماضيين نظمت المنظمة قوافل إلي مصر بالتعاون مع أطباء وممرضين أمريكيين ودوليين فى ثلاث مناسبات. ففي شهر مايو 2007 زارت جمعية “عملية الإبتسامة“ محافظة أسيوط ، وفي أكتوبر 2007 زارت قنا. هذا العام تقوم الجمعية بقافلة فى القاهرة من 23 إلى 30 أكتوبر الحالي بمستشفى المقاولين العرب بمدينة نصر.
