La Comisión Económica para África elaboró y presentó el documento titulado “Policy and programmatic measures taken to meet the needs of the elderly: Africa's response to a budding challenge” (Medidas normativas y programáticas para satisfacer las necesidades de las personas de edad: la respuesta de África a un problema en ciernes) en una conferencia sobre el envejecimiento en África organizada por el Gobierno de Sudáfrica, el Human Sciences Research Council y la Union for African Population Studies, que tuvo lugar en Boksburg (Sudáfrica) en agosto de 2004.
